Fabricating Nature - Flowers
I discovered the technique I use in Fabricating Nature in 1998. I was creating "Puy de Dome" and needed to add large sunflowers to the foreground. Finding that I needed a pattern of the whole flower in order to reconstruct it properly, I came up with the idea to draw it on muslin. I liked the flowers so much that I decided to enlarge the pattern and make the flowers a stand-alone piece.
In a larger format, the flowers lost depth and needed something else to make them more realistic. Having painted some in the past, I decided that I would try using acrylic paint. This piece became "Summer's Bounty" and "Fabricating Nature" was created. I have refined this process through the years.
